The interesting journey of a farm boy born July 10, 1929, who moved on to Jesus June 27, 2023. The son of Henry and Augusta he was born on their farm in Langenburg, Saskatchewan. John was the oldest of three children, John, Cecilia, and Helen (who predeceased him in 1996). At the age of 11, John was putting crystal sets together which led to his own repair shop at the age of 14. At age 25 he joined CKOS installing studio and transmitter equipment and later rebuilding stations in Weyburn and Estevan. John and his wife, Mary moved to Vernon in 1970 where he became a technical engineer for CJIB until he retired in 1990. They soon became snowbirds wintering in Yuma, Arizona He loved dancing, was an award-winning marksman and longtime member of the Vernon Collectors Club. He is survived by sister Cecilia Desjardins (and Aurel in Calder, Saskatchewan) plus numerous relatives and friends including Jackie’s daughter Linda Myers. John also had his Mission friends Bobbe MacKenzie and Brenda Toews who were blessed to be his ‘volunteer’ caregivers over the past three years sharing many a smile and tear with him. Thank you to the hospital nurses on the 2nd and 7th floor, Dr Smith, Pastor David Hunter from Peace Lutheran Church and to the staff and residents at Orchard Valley Retirement Residence, who made his last months before hospitalization so comfortable and pleasant. A very sincere thank you to Sarah Verburgh, from Interior Health, for her guidance and compassion to John, Brenda, and Bobbe this past year. Always a giver, John walked 36 blocks each day to greet at the Vernon Courthouse from 7-9 then volunteer at the Mission. He was 92 years old! He loved children and donated all the money he made as Santa through the years and his entire estate to Variety – the Children’s Charity of BC. May 2021 |
July 28, 1939 – May 28, 2021 at the age of 81 years. A former Shuswap teacher-librarian, emergency program volunteer and amateur radio enthusiast is being remembered for his tireless volunteerism.
Essex had been a dedicated emergency support services volunteer since the Silver Creek wildfire of 1998 and he assisted in the formation of SEP. Essex attended his last volunteer meeting just over a week ago.
Essex was willing to step in on a moment’s notice to fill any role in an emergency, although he particularly enjoyed his associations with Shuswap Amateur Radio Club, working in logistics and documenting everything in photos.
Already the recipient of several awards, in 2017 Essex received a Public Safety Lifeline Volunteer Award for lifetime achievement from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, recognizing him for his longstanding commitment and service through amateur radio clubs.
In 1993, Essex earned his basic qualification in amateur radio and joined the Shuswap Amateur Radio Club (SARC) and the Salmon Arm Seniors Radio Club.
He retired in 1998 after 35 years of teaching in the public school system, the last 31 years as teacher-librarian in what was then Shuswap Junior Secondary. About a month later, SARC was asked by then emergency program coordinator Gordon Pelletier to provide assistance with future emergencies. The call for help came sooner than anyone expected with the July 29 ignition of the Silver Creek fire on Fly Hills. Through the event, Essex did radio work and helped with public information phone lines.
In 2005, Essex was named the Provincial Emergency Program (PEP) Communications Volunteer of the Year. In the same year, he received a Certificate of Special Recognition from PEP. In 2014 the Shuswap Amateur Radio Club awarded him a lifetime membership. |

He received his Laboratory Technologist training in Kamloops and continued his career in Williams Lake, Penticton and ultimately in Vernon where he was the Chief Laboratory Technologist at the Vernon Jubilee hospital for 24 years. After retiring from the hospital he worked as a coroner for several years. Lowell was a dedicated husband and father first and foremost. He treasured his children and embraced every moment with them. He especially loved his role as grandpa. He was known for his kind and compassionate spirit, warm smile and positivity and always a helping hand and always had anything you needed to borrow. He spent many years singing barbershop in a quartet (The Marksmen), he and his wife were members of the Vernon amateur radio club with ham radio and were very involved in events throughout the valley, supporting his wife with dog agility, was an avid downhill skier, enjoyed camping, fishing and his annual trip to Mexico. He was a patient teacher when it came to teaching his wife, children and grandchildren his passion for downhill skiing. He loved the time he spent with family and friends and will be dearly missed and forever in our hearts. Donations can be made to The Prostate Cancer Foundation BC in the memory of Lowell.
